Why visit Livorno with a private tour guide?
Livorno is the least Tuscan city in Tuscany, and that’s the interesting part. In 1591 the Medici issued the Leggi Livornine, guaranteeing freedom of worship and an amnesty to anyone who came to settle here — Jews expelled from Spain and Portugal, Greeks, Armenians, Dutch merchants, North Africans. What grew out of it was a free port and a genuinely mixed city, with a canal quarter, the Venezia Nuova, dug by Venetian engineers. Modigliani was born in it. A licensed official tour guide is what stops Livorno being nothing more than the car park for Florence.
With us you’re always private: your group and your guide, never strangers. You set the pace, you travel in a luxury vehicle with a chauffeur, and there’s a travel coordinator on call at any hour. The private shore excursion to Florence starts at 149€.
Private tours from Livorno: what you can do
Florence is the classic day. Ninety minutes each way
Duomo · Piazza della Signoria · Ponte Vecchio · Uffizi
Want the day that never runs late? Pisa and Lucca
Pisa is twenty minutes from the port and Lucca forty. And Lucca’s Renaissance walls are wide enough to be a park — four kilometres all the way round, and almost nobody on a cruise sees them. The private shore excursion to Pisa and Lucca is 179€.
Siena and San Gimignano, if you want medieval Tuscany
Siena’s Piazza del Campo is shell-shaped because it was laid over a sloping Roman marketplace, and the Palio is still run around it twice each summer. San Gimignano still has fourteen of its tower-houses, built by families competing on height. The private shore excursion of Siena and San Gimignano is 179€.
Siena · Piazza del Campo · San Gimignano · Val d’Elsa
Had enough of monuments? Go and drink instead
An hour inland the map turns into cypresses, stone villages and vineyards. The private tour to the Chianti Classico wine area is 179€, with winery visits arranged in advance — which matters, because the good estates don’t take walk-ins.
Greve in Chianti · Castellina · Panzano · winery visits
The Cinque Terre only work if your call is long
The five villages are about two hours up the coast, so this is a full day and the timing has to be exact — the train, the trail closures and your all-aboard time all have to agree. The private tour of the Cinque Terre from Livorno is 219€.
Monterosso · Vernazza · Manarola · Riomaggiore
Arriving by cruise ship
Livorno is the port for Florence and Pisa and it works like one: the terminals are industrial, the centre is a short drive away and almost everyone heads inland. That’s a reasonable choice — but it means the whole value of the call rests on driving times, and those aren’t negotiable. Florence is ninety minutes each way, Pisa twenty, Lucca forty, Siena an hour and a half, the Cinque Terre two hours.
So we build every day backwards from your all-aboard time, with a margin for the return leg. Your guide and driver meet you at the terminal, the coordinator tracks the schedule through the day, and if the ship’s times change we replan rather than cancel. If you only need transport, a private transfer starts at 49€.
What’s Livorno like for a visitor?
Base for getting out
Pisa at twenty minutes, Lucca at forty, Florence and Siena at ninety, the Cinque Terre at two hours. As a launchpad for Tuscany there’s nothing better placed.
Food & markets
Cacciucco, the fish stew that supposedly needs five kinds of fish for the five c’s, and ponce, a coffee and rum concoction invented here from British punch. The covered market is one of the largest in Italy.
History & monuments
A seventeenth-century free port with a canal quarter and four centuries of religious tolerance behind it — a fascinating story, but bombed heavily in 1943 and rebuilt. The monuments are elsewhere in Tuscany.
Walkable centre
The Venezia Nuova and the Terrazza Mascagni seafront are a pleasure on foot, but the port area is industrial and the centre needs a short drive from the ship.
Beach & coast
The rocky coast south towards Castiglioncello and the Etruscan Riviera is good, and the Terrazza Mascagni is one of the finest seafront promenades in Italy. The port itself, less so.
Nightlife & buzz
A working port city with a local evening around the canals. Pleasant, but nobody stays in Livorno for the nightlife.
Everything Tuscany is famous for is within reach of this port. Florence is ninety minutes inland, Cinque Terre two hours up the coast, and Genoa is the Ligurian capital beyond it.
Further out, Bologna is where the food becomes the reason to travel, Rome is three hours south, and Milan three hours north.

Frequently asked questions about private tours from Livorno
How much does a private tour from Livorno cost?
Florence starts at 149€, and Florence with Pisa on the way back is the same. Pisa and Lucca, Siena and San Gimignano, and the Chianti Classico day are 179€ each. The Cinque Terre is 219€, and a private transfer starts at 49€.
Can we do Florence in a day from the port?
Yes — ninety minutes each way leaves five or six hours in the city, which covers the Duomo, the Signoria, the Ponte Vecchio and one gallery. It doesn’t cover the Uffizi and the Accademia and lunch, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you a bad day.
Will we get back to the ship on time?
That’s the part we plan first. Every itinerary is built backwards from your all-aboard time with a margin on the return leg, the coordinator follows the day, and if the ship changes its times we replan rather than cancel.
Is Livorno itself worth seeing?
If your call is short, go to Florence or Pisa — we’d say the same. If you’ve been to Tuscany before, the Venezia Nuova canals, the covered market and the Terrazza Mascagni make a genuinely good half day, and almost nobody does it.
Pisa or Lucca — or both?
Both, if you can. Pisa is twenty minutes away and the Piazza dei Miracoli needs an hour or so; Lucca is another twenty and is the one people are surprised by, with walls you can walk the whole way round. They fit comfortably in the same day.
Can we arrange a winery visit in Chianti?
Yes, and we book it in advance — that’s the point. The good estates don’t take walk-ins, so a Chianti day without reservations is a drive through pretty countryside and not much else.
