What’s Lake Como like for a visitor?

Do we need a boat, or is the road enough?
The road is enough to see the villages. The boat is what you want for the villas — Balbianello in particular was built to be arrived at from the water and looks entirely different that way. In August the boat also skips the traffic, which is worth something.
Can we swim in the lake?
You can, and there are beaches and lidos, mainly around Menaggio, Lecco and the lower shore. Be ready for the temperature: it’s an alpine lake 410 metres deep, so even in August the water is bracing.
What do we need to cross into Switzerland?
A valid passport or national ID card for everyone in the group, including children. Lugano is twenty minutes from Como and the crossing is usually quick, but the document is not optional — we’ll remind you when you book.
When’s the best time to come?
May, June and September. July and August are beautiful and very busy, with Bellagio parking effectively full by mid-morning. Many villas and boat services close from November to March, so winter is quiet in every sense.
