The smallest islands in Spain

There are approximately 8,000 kilometers of coastline with many islands, islets and islets that are little known to the public. Many of these paradisiacal sites are inhabited or uninhabited. 1. La Graciosa

Many believe that only 7 islands make up the archipelago of the Canary Islands; however, after many years, the island ‘La Graciosa’ became number 8. It is one of the most important parts of the Marine Reserve of the Chinijo Archipelago. 

The area has acquired great scenic importance. In addition, it is very close to important fishing villages, such as Pedro Barba and Caleta del Sebo. To get to know it, you only need to visit the area through a tour.

This island is located 8 kilometers from the port of Santa Paola and is currently one of the most popular places for summer tourism. It is the only inhabited island within the Valencian Community. Approximately 80 people live in this area nestled in the Mediterranean Sea. 

Its foundation dates back to the 18th century, by order of King Carlos III. It has an enclosure protected by walls, which has been declared a Historic-Artistic Site. In addition, it was declared a Cultural Interest Asset. The purpose of this enclosure was to protect the island from any enemy attack by Muslim pirates.

3. Buda Island

This place has managed to prevail as the best preserved in the Mediterranean. It is located very close to the town of Deltebre and is approximately 5 kilometers long. This island has a formation in the Ebro Delta, whose beginning dates back to the eighteenth century and over two centuries grew gradually. 

During the twentieth century, it became home to more than 40 families, which were dedicated to the planting and cultivation of rice. Nowadays, the island has consolidated as an uninhabited place, but this is not an impediment to enjoy the nature and the peace that is breathed in it.

4. Ons Island: One of the smallest islands where beauty reigns.

Within the National Park of the Atlantic Islands, we can find one of the smallest islands that correspond to the area of Galicia. It has a very ancient history whose origin dates back to the Paleolithic, and is located in an area near the estuary of Pontevedra. 

The island of Ons allows visitors to get to know one of the most beautiful coastal towns in Galicia. In addition, you can also enjoy golden sandy beaches and even taste the best dishes of the region. This is a trip not to be missed in the north of Spain.

5. Trocadero

Trocadero Island is defined as one of the best places where you can enjoy the beauty of the sunset. We can find it very close to Puerto Real, and the sunsets that can be observed from the bay of Cadiz are completely unique. Some of the animals that can be observed in the place are storks, vultures, herons and many others.

The Trocadero has been designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds. This island is only 4 kilometers long and its historical value is of great importance. This area is also home to the ruins of the fort of San Luis, dating back to the 18th century; in addition, there are some Phoenician and Roman amphorae along with cannonballs from the War of Independence.

6. Lobos Islet

If we travel to the northeast of Fuerteventura, we can find the small island of Lobos, where there are less than ten inhabitants. The origin of the name of this island goes back to the populations of monk seals that lived in the area. However, within the natural park it is possible to find more than 130 different types of birds and plants. Over time, it was even visited by explorers from Ancient Rome.

7. Dragonera Island

In Spain there are many popular Balearic Islands, for example, you can tour Mallorca, Ibiza, and others, but it is also possible to find the island of Dragonera. Much has been said about these lands; for example, that they are a part of the Tramontana mountain range, which separated from the area of Mallorca thousands of years ago. However, with the passage of time, the island has been consolidated as a point where it was possible to defend the area from pirates attacking the region.

8. Santa Clara Island

This small island has never been inhabited, except for the occasion when many people suffering from the plague in the 16th century were sent there to avoid contagion. Currently, it is only possible to find Iberian lizards from San Sebastian on this islet in the bay of La Concha. 

9. Sálvora Island

This small islet is only 2 kilometers long. In addition, this island is part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands. Some of the elements that make up the place are the traditional granaries, the mermaid sculpture, a chapel, the salting factory and much more. The place is uninhabited and gives the impression that time has paused.

10. The island of Mazarrón

Finally, another of the smallest islands in Spain, unknown to many, is the island of Mazarrón, which is located in the coastal area of the region of Murcia. In front of its port, we can find the Islica, which is a set of land where two Phoenician ships have been shipwrecked. This island is capable of attracting a lot of attention from the moment you step on dry land, thanks to the number of old houses and the large number of birds that exist.
