Sorrento sits on a tufa cliff above the sea, and the oddest thing about it is right in the middle of town. From the edge of Piazza Tasso you can look straight down into the Vallone dei Mulini, a ravine with an abandoned flour mill at the bottom that ferns have been slowly swallowing since it was cut off in 1866. The lemons in your limoncello are sfusato sorrentino, protected and twice the size of the ones you know, and the marquetry workshops here have been inlaying wood since the 1800s. Sorrento is a tender port: ships anchor in the bay and bring passengers into Marina Piccola, from where the town is 50 metres straight up — by lift, by the Via Luigi de Maio ramp, or by road. That vertical detail decides how much fits into a call, so we plan the day backwards from your all-aboard time and start from the pier, not from a hotel.

The old town is compact, flat and mostly pedestrian in the evening. The catch is the 50 m drop to the port, which you take by lift or ramp.

Sorrento is the balcony everybody books; the view is what you should go and touch. Capri is twenty minutes across the water, Amalfi is the other end of the coast road, and Naples is everything Sorrento deliberately isn’t.
Further out, Salerno opens the coast from the eastern side, Rome is three hours by road, and if you like this kind of cliff-top town with a volcano in the background, Taormina is its Sicilian twin.

Amazing day in Pompeii! The private Pompeii tour was amazing! It was all we could have asked for in a European excursion. We were picked up from our hotel and met in Pompeii by our guide Celeste who spent 2.5 hours walking us through Pompeii and giving us the history and stories that go along with it. We were then met by our driver and brought back to our hotel. Everything was well organized and seamless! Highly recommend this tour and Celeste!
