Why visit Amalfi with a private tour guide?
Amalfi isn’t just a pretty harbour. It was one of Italy’s four maritime republics, and the Tavole Amalfitane — the maritime code written here — governed shipping across the Mediterranean until 1570. The cathedral’s 62-step staircase is theatre on purpose, and the valley behind town held paper mills from the 13th century: Amalfi’s bambagina paper, made from rags, is still produced by hand and the old mill is now a museum. A licensed official tour guide is what turns a lemon-and-postcard stop into the small empire it used to be.
With us you’re always private: your group and your guide, nobody else. You set the pace, and on the SS163 we put you in a luxury vehicle with a chauffeur — on this road, that’s not a luxury. There’s a travel coordinator on call at any hour too. The private full-day tour of the Amalfi Coast starts at 179€.
Private tours from Amalfi: what you can do
The whole coast, from the town that named it
Positano, Praiano, Ravello and Amalfi in a day, driven by someone who knows which passing places work and when the coaches come through. The full-day Amalfi Coast tour starts at 179€ and the pace is yours: an hour in Ravello’s gardens, or Positano’s steps at your own speed.
Positano · Praiano · Ravello · Atrani · Amalfi
Pompeii, over the hill
Pompeii is about an hour and a quarter from Amalfi, over the Agerola pass or along the coast — a drive with a view either way. The private tour of Pompeii from Amalfi starts at 147€, with your guide inside the site and your driver waiting at the gate.
Pompeii · Forum · House of the Faun · Villa of the Mysteries
Vesuvius and Herculaneum: the fuller version
The volcano that did it, and the second town it buried. Herculaneum kept its wooden beams and upper floors because it was covered by a pyroclastic surge rather than ash. Pompeii and Vesuvius from 185€, or Pompeii and Herculaneum from 180€.
Vesuvius crater · Herculaneum · Pompeii
Naples in a day from the coast
An hour and a half north and a different planet: the UNESCO old town, the Veiled Christ and the best pizza in Italy. Naples from Amalfi starts at 175€, or take both in the Naples and Pompeii full day from 205€.
Spaccanapoli · Cappella Sansevero · Piazza del Plebiscito
Arriving by sea, or by road
Amalfi has no deep-water berth: cruise ships anchor offshore and tender passengers onto the town pier, which puts you in the middle of Amalfi the moment you land — the cathedral steps are two minutes away. What eats the clock here is the coast road, not the arrival, so anything beyond the coast itself has to be planned backwards from your all-aboard time.
With one call, the coast (from 179€) or Pompeii (from 147€) both work; both together don’t, and we’ll tell you so. Arriving by land instead, a private transfer from Naples airport or station starts at 40€ — worth it on a road where parking is the real cost.
What’s Amalfi like for a visitor?
History & monuments
A maritime republic with its own naval code, an Arab-Norman cathedral and 13th-century paper mills. Small, but with far more history than its reputation suggests.
Beach & sea
The beaches are small, pebbly and set between cliffs — beautiful, and crowded in August. The water is the reason to come; the sand isn’t.
Food & lemons
Scialatielli ai frutti di mare, anchovies from Cetara, and lemons so large they’re served sliced as a dessert. The delizia al limone was invented on this coast.
Walkable centre
The centre is tiny and car-free in practice, but this is a vertical place: stairs to everything, and Ravello is 350 m straight up. Not a coast for tired knees.
Base for getting out
Ravello, Positano, Pompeii, Naples and Paestum are all reachable, though everything is slower than the map suggests because of the road.
Nightlife & buzz
Dinner with a view, a drink in the piazza, and that’s the evening. Amalfi is quiet after eleven, which is precisely why most people choose it.
The coast is a chain, and it’s worth walking a few more links. Sorrento holds the western end with the hotels and the ferries, Salerno the eastern one with the trains, and Capri sits offshore in the middle of the view.
For the opposite of all this calm, Naples is ninety minutes away and unapologetically loud, Rome is the full imperial scale, and Taormina is the same idea done in Sicilian.

Frequently asked questions about private tours in Amalfi
How much does a private tour from Amalfi cost?
Pompeii starts at 147€, Naples at 175€, Pompeii and Herculaneum at 180€, the full-day Amalfi Coast tour at 179€, Pompeii and Vesuvius at 185€ and Naples with Pompeii at 205€. A private transfer from Naples airport or station starts at 40€.
Is it worth hiring a driver on the Amalfi Coast?
On this road, more than anywhere else in Italy. The SS163 is narrow, busy and short of parking, and in summer there are traffic restrictions. With a driver you’re dropped at the door and collected where you finish, instead of spending an hour looking for a space.
How long does it take to get to Pompeii from Amalfi?
About an hour and a quarter each way, depending on the season and whether we go over the Agerola pass or along the coast. It makes a comfortable day out, not a quick morning.
Can we visit Ravello on the coast tour?
Yes, and we recommend it. Ravello sits 350 m above Amalfi with the gardens of Villa Rufolo and Villa Cimbrone, and it’s the one stop most group itineraries drop for time. On a private day it’s yours to decide.
Where do cruise ships dock in Amalfi?
There’s no deep-water berth: ships anchor offshore and tender passengers onto the town pier, which lands you right in the centre. The road, not the tender, is what limits how far you can go in a call.
Can we change the plan as we go?
That’s what private is for. Three villages or one long lunch, the paper-mill museum instead of a beach, or an early start for Pompeii before the heat. Tell us when you ask for a quote.
