It was eleven in the morning on a Tuesday in July and the queue stretched into the street.
Not to the corner. To the actual street — the one before the main entrance, the one that isn’t even part of the site yet. There were families with makeshift parasols, children who had already lost all interest in Roman ruins, and a couple scrolling through their phones trying to buy tickets online. Too late.
That is Pompeii in high season without a booking.
The good news is there is a fix, and it is no secret: get there first thing or book your ticket days in advance. Both together are unbeatable. Either one on its own already makes a difference.
The ticket office opens at nine. If you are inside before ten, Pompeii is a different place. The cobblestone streets are still in shadow. The tourists arriving by bus from Naples are still having breakfast. You can stand in the middle of Via dell’Abbondanza with nothing blocking the view.
By eleven, that is gone.

Advance tickets are available on the official Parco Archeologico di Pompei website. They do not cost more. They only require deciding your date and time in advance — which is exactly what most visitors do not do because they plan to wing it. The problem is that everyone wings it the same way.
One more thing no one tells you: the Porta Marina entrance has a shorter queue than Porta Anfiteatro, even though both lead to the same site. If you are going alone without a guide, Porta Marina is what most people use because it is closer to the train station. Anfiteatro gets less foot traffic and puts you closer to the eastern mosaics.
If you go with a private guide, none of this is your problem. The access logistics, the booking, the timing. You show up and the site is already open for you.
That changes the visit in a way that is hard to explain until you have lived it: when you are not exhausted from the queue, when you have not been fighting with a ticketing app in the car park, when you walk in and the first thing you do is look at the ruins instead of searching for signs — Pompeii is a different experience.
Not just because you save time. But because you arrive with your head where it needs to be.
At Tour Travel & More we organise private tours to Pompeii from Naples with an official licensed guide, private vehicle and fully managed access from the very first moment. No queues, no last-minute stress, no half a morning lost at the gate.
