Christmas markets: The heart of tradition

Alsace’s Christmas markets are world-famous and for good reason: they embody the festive spirit in its purest form. From the end of November, the squares and streets of towns such as Strasbourg, Colmar and Eguisheim are filled with wooden stalls selling local produce, handicrafts and gastronomic delights.

Strasbourg’s Christmas market, known as the Christkindelsmärik, is the oldest in France and one of the largest in Europe. Here, Notre-Dame Cathedral becomes the backdrop for a magical parade of lights and Christmas scents. Don’t miss out on Alsatian specialities such as bretzel, gingerbread and the famous mulled wine, ideal to combat the cold.

Colmar, on the other hand, offers a more intimate experience, with its illuminated canals and five interconnected Christmas markets, each with its own unique charm.

Villages that look like something out of a fairytale

Alsace would not be so magical at Christmas without its medieval villages, whose half-timbered houses and festive decorations create a dreamlike atmosphere.

Riquewihr, often called ‘the most beautiful village in France’, unfolds its charm with cobbled streets adorned with garlands, lanterns and Christmas trees. As you stroll through, it’s easy to imagine yourself in a Christmas film.

Eguisheim, with its circular layout and colourful facades, is transformed into a picture-postcard village. Here, the warmth of the locals and the authenticity of Christmas traditions add an extra layer of magic.

Kaysersberg, with its hilltop castle, combines history and festive spirit to perfection. Its small shops selling crafts and local products are ideal for unique souvenirs.

Alsatian gastronomy: A Christmas for the senses

Christmas in Alsace is also a Christmas at the table. The region combines the best of French and German cuisine, offering a variety of irresistible flavours.

Foie gras, which is native to the region, is a must at Christmas celebrations. If you prefer sweet flavours, bredele – small decorated biscuits – are a must-try tradition.

Another iconic treat is kougelhopf, a sponge cake in the shape of a wreath, perfect with a cup of hot chocolate or coffee after browsing the markets.

Don’t forget to sample Alsatian white wine, such as Riesling or Gewürztraminer, whose fresh, fruity flavours are the perfect accompaniment to festive meals.

Traditions and shows that light up the soul

Christmas in Alsace is not only visual, it is full of traditions that touch the heart. Many cities offer light and music shows in their churches and main squares. Strasbourg, for example, organises Christmas concerts in its cathedral, which will resonate in your soul with their beauty.

Moreover, the people of Alsace are known for their hospitality and passion for traditions. During the Christmas season, it is common to find community events where stories, songs and recipes that have been passed down from generation to generation are shared.

The spirit of Christmas is also reflected in the figure of St Nicholas, who arrives on 6 December to hand out sweets to children. This celebration, though simple, is deeply moving and captures the essence of the region: a mixture of warmth, community and joy.
