The Best Time to Visit the Amalfi Coast

There is no single perfect month for the Amalfi Coast, but there are times when the trip is noticeably more comfortable, more affordable, and more enjoyable. July and August fill every parking spot, drive up prices, and turn the SS163 into a permanent traffic jam. Winter leaves half the businesses closed. Between those extremes, there are windows that many travelers overlook.

May and June: the best time to visit the Amalfi Coast

If you have to choose a period, May and June are unbeatable for balancing weather, prices, and overall experience. Temperatures range from 16 to 27 °C, the sea is already warm enough for swimming from late May, lemon trees are in full bloom, and villages still move at a local pace before the summer surge.

Why May stands out over June for planning:

  • Accommodation prices are noticeably lower than in high season
  • The Sentiero degli Dei — the coast’s most famous trail — is ideal walking temperature
  • Positano and Ravello still have restaurant availability without booking weeks in advance
  • Ferries between villages run at full schedule from early in the month

June brings more heat and more tourists, but still stays well below the chaos of August. If budget allows you to choose, May wins.

September and October: the second chance

September is the Amalfi Coast’s secret month. The Mediterranean reaches its highest annual water temperature (around 25–26 °C), the sun is still generous, and from the 15th onward tourist pressure drops noticeably.

What changes week by week in September:

  • First week: still carrying August’s volume
  • 10th to 30th: fewer jams on the SS163, parking possible in Amalfi, viewpoints clear at sunset
  • End of month: some businesses begin reducing hours or announcing closures

October adds golden autumn light, vineyards in harvest, and a landscape that gains hues summer never shows. The trade-off: boats between villages reduce frequency and some hotels close before the end of the month.

July and August: high season with everything that entails

Summer brings perfect conditions for swimming, boat trips, and long sunsets — but at a real cost: hotels at peak rates, the SS163 blocked for hours, and Positano ferry queues that are the norm, not the exception.

When it makes sense to go in July or August:

  • If the main goal is beach and sailing, the sea is at its best
  • The Ravello Festival brings top-tier classical music to gardens overlooking the Mediterranean
  • Ferragosto (August 15th) brings fireworks to every village along the coast
  • The longest days allow making the most of morning and afternoon without rushing the light

The non-negotiable requirement: book accommodation 4–6 months in advance. Without a prior booking, August on the Amalfi Coast is a frustrating trip.

Winter and low season: November to March

The Amalfi Coast in winter is, in many ways, a different destination. Positano with four visitors on the seafront promenade, fishermen reclaiming Amalfi’s harbor, accommodation at less than half the August price.

The reality of winter:

  • November is the rainiest month (average 10–12 rainy days per month)
  • Many restaurants, hotels, and tour operators close between November and March
  • Ferries between villages stop running or operate at minimum frequency
  • The cold is rarely extreme: the coldest nights rarely drop below 6–7 °C

December has its own charm: the Christmas markets in Amalfi and Positano are genuine, not a tourist recreation. January and February are for those who seek complete authenticity and don’t mind finding part of the coast closed.

Festivals and events: dates that change the decision

Date Event Location
Holy WeekGood Friday ProcessionNocelle and Amalfi
MayFesta di Sant’AndreaAmalfi
July–AugustRavello Festival (classical music)Ravello
August 15thFerragosto and fireworksAll villages
September (alternate years)Regatta of the Maritime RepublicsAmalfi

Good Friday in Nocelle is one of Italy’s most awe-inspiring experiences: a torchlit night procession down stone steps, surrounded by cliff-face silence. The Ravello Festival, active for decades, brings the world’s finest classical music performers to gardens with a direct view of the Mediterranean.

How far in advance to book by season

This is the practical information most guides about the Amalfi Coast fail to include.

Season Months Recommended lead time
HighJuly and August4–6 months
Medium-highJune and September6–10 weeks
MediumMay and October3–6 weeks
LowNovember – April1–2 weeks*

*Verify accommodation and activity availability before booking in low season.

A July week booked in May is a risk. An October week booked in September is perfectly viable.
