Cartagena

In its origins, this city was known by the name Qart Hadasht. Cartagena was founded by the Carthaginian Hasdrubal the Handsome around the year 227 BC. Previously in this location there was a small tartessian settlement known as Mastia. Then under the rule of the Roman Empire it was renamed Carthago Nova. Later, Cartagena fell into Byzantine hands and changed its name again to Carthago Spartaria, until it became the city we know today.
