The Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp was built in 1936 by the SS. Until 1945, more than 200,000 people from all over Europe were imprisoned there. From 1945-1950, the Soviet Special Camp No. 7/No. 1 was located on the site. After that, in 1961, the GDR founded the Sachsenhausen National Memorial. The present Memorial and the Sachsenhausen Museum have been part of the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation since 1993. The Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum is a place of commemoration and learning as well as a museum of contemporary history.
