Abu Simbel was built by the most known pharaoh in Egypt, RAMSES II. The temple holds 4 massive colossi of himself adorning the facade. Abu Simbel is considered, after the Pyramids and the Sphinx, the most spectacular monument of ancient Egypt.

The enthroned colossi are the largest sculptures in Egypt which are still standing. Their hands alone are longer than the height of an average person. Carved out of a sandstone cliff on the west bank of the Nile, the temples were unknown to the outside world until their rediscovery in 1813 by the Swiss researcher Johann Ludwig Burckhardt.

The 20-metre seated figures of Ramses are set against the recessed face of the cliff, two on either side of the entrance to the main temple. Carved around their feet are small figures representing Ramses’ children, his queen, Nefertari, and his mother, Muttuy (Mut-tuy, or Queen Ti)

The temple is dedicated to the sun gods Amon-Re and Re-Horakhte. Its inside consists of three halls extending 56 metres into the cliff. The temple is decorated with more Osiride statues of the king and with painted scenes of his purported victory at the Battle of Kadesh. Twice a year (February 22 and October 22) a very special phenomenon happens, while the first rays of the morning sun penetrate the whole length of the temple and illuminate the shrine in its innermost sanctuary. Some Egyptologists have speculated that these may be the anniversaries of Ramses’ coronation and birth.

The Temple Of Hathor, located north of Ramses’ main temple, is a smaller second temple which was constructed in honor of the pharaoh’s beloved chief wife, Nefertari.
