The Casco Viejo and its Seven Streets

Across the water, the old town is seven original streets, a covered market that is one of the largest in Europe, and the Plaza Nueva, where the arcades fill up every evening. This is where Bilbao eats, and the difference between a good pintxo bar and a tourist one is one street and nobody tells you which.

Pintxos, done properly

A pintxo is not a tapa: it is ordered, not given, and it is eaten standing, one per bar, moving on. The counter is a display, the good things are cooked to order on the blackboard, and the txakoli is poured from a height to open it up. Your guide knows the rotation, which is exactly what a first-timer cannot improvise.

San Sebastián, Getaria and the coast

An hour east, San Sebastián curves around La Concha, one of the great urban beaches in Europe. On the way, Getaria grills whole turbot over coals on the street and produces the txakoli that goes with it. With a private vehicle and chauffeur it is a comfortable day, and Biarritz is barely further.

Expensive but worth it Remarkable that our guide could provide us with a great overview of the Guggenheim (inside and out), as well as details about the history of the exhibits and more. No way we could have done this tour in 2 hours and seen as much or learned anywhere near as much as we did.And the guide made suggestions as to where take the best photos, etc. She met us just outside the entrance and got us admitted as the very first visitors! No lines for us, thank you.Really pleased and would highly recommend. A good guide can truly make the best use of your time.

Best tour ever…get Zorione! One of the best museum tours I ever had…and I have been around the world. Absolutely ask for Zorione to be your guide. So knowledgeable about the building (an art piece itself!), the art installations and the region. Speaks 5 languages. We were scheduled for 2 hours. 2 1/2 hours flew by! Worth every dollar.
